*TWENTY FIFTH REVIEW*
NAME- UNDER THE MANGO TREE
AUTHOR- BINA PILLAI
RATING- 9.5/10
Very well written book by Bhina Pillai, depicting a time an era where women were meant to leave their maternal homes and be bound to their husbands abusive ways with no escapes or return. Loved how Diya found love in all other areas of her life, spent years improving her skills, excelled in all professions and was a rock for her children. Definitely a page turner. You will not put this book down till the end.
It takes a lot of courage to walk out of an abusive marriage. An immense amount of willpower to stand upto and fight against the plague of patriarchy. And more than anything, it takes a lot of courage to live with the memory of a lost love. A love that was so precious. Under the Mango Tree is a gripping tale that talks on these themes through the life of the protagonist, Diya Nair. The love story of Diya and Aditya is magical and tragic at the same time. The mental, emotional and physical abuse that Diya succumbs to in her longstanding marriage makes your heart go out for her. Diya's will, her undying attitude in any given situation is the highlight of the book. I loved the book to the core. It is a beautiful story where at one point you will feel desperate and sad for Diya and at another, you will be happy for her. For the decisions she take. You will be in awe of her strength and preserverence. Personally, the book felt home for its description of Nair traditions and customs. I could actually visualize the scenes where the writer describes Diya's marriage. Loved it totally!
